This finding is particularly intriguing, as it suggests that the public is already feeling the pinch of inflation, even before it's fully reflected in official statistics. What makes this situation especially noteworthy is the timing. The survey was conducted in March, and while Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) only rose 1.20% year-on-year at that time, consumers were already anticipating a stronger price surge. This is a clear indication that the public is more sensitive to economic fluctuations than the data might suggest. Personally, I find it fascinating that the public's perception of inflation can often be ahead of the curve, even if the official numbers don't yet reflect it. This raises a deeper question: how do we ensure that government policies and interventions are in sync with the public's expectations and concerns? The Institute attributes this shift in sentiment to the US-Iran war, which has caused a ripple effect on global energy prices and transportation costs. While government measures have helped cushion these impacts, the import price index rose 23.07% year-on-year in April, indicating that external cost pressures are mounting. What this really suggests is that the government's inflation warning threshold may need to be re-evaluated, especially as the public's expectations are already surpassing it. One thing that immediately stands out is the sectoral breakdown of expected cost increases. Transportation and energy costs are expected to rise the most, by an average of 15.87%, followed by food and dining expenses at 12.54%. This highlights the sectors that are most vulnerable to inflationary pressures. However, it's also worth noting that despite a cooling property market, more than half of respondents still expect home prices to rise over the next six months. This suggests that the property market may be more resilient to inflation than other sectors. The survey also examined the impact of the government's universal cash handouts. While the marginal propensity to consume was estimated at 0.29, which is below the threshold of one, it's still a positive sign that these payments can stimulate consumption. What many people don't realize is that the effectiveness of universal cash handouts can be enhanced by imposing conditions on eligibility, rather than distributing them universally. This raises a broader question: how can we design policies that are both effective and equitable? In my opinion, the key to addressing inflation concerns lies in a multi-faceted approach. It's not just about cushioning the impact of external shocks, but also about ensuring that the public's expectations are managed and that policies are designed to address the root causes of inflation. From my perspective, the survey results are a wake-up call for policymakers to be more proactive in managing public expectations and addressing the underlying economic challenges. As we move forward, it will be crucial to monitor how these expectations evolve and how policymakers respond to them.
